Enduring Love by Ian McEwan
Now this is a book that might crop up on your reading list if you’re an English student; but don’t pass it over like you might do other books. Let’s be honest here; we all just read the synopsis sometimes! Enduring Love is a fantastic book and, even if you don’t need to read it for a course, I would definitely recommend it.
You’ll have heard this statement before but when you start reading this book you won’t be able to put it down. I’m sure you will agree with me on this when you hear it starts with a horrific hot-air balloon accident. Joe Rose, the main character and narrator of the novel, along with several others try to help the 10 year old boy who is trapped inside the basket, which tragically results in the death of one of the men, John Logan.
This sparks off more than you would expect; with one of the other rescuers, Jed Parry, falling quite literally madly in love with Joe. The novel follows Jed’s obsessive and, at times, terrifying pursuit of Joe and the effect that this has on Joe’s own state of mind and his relationship with long-term partner Clarissa.
The book is full of toxic fear and paranoia right from the offset and, not wanting to give too much away I will just say that, the conclusion to this novel is far from disappointing. You too will find yourself infatuated with finding out how this twisted romance will end.
Overall, I would say that if this novel does appear on any reading lists you may have; read it! It is an amazing book which I could not recommend more. Definitely not a boring read as you find yourself going back to it again and again; it just has one of those storylines that never get’s old.
