There isn’t a right or wrong answer on what you should pack when you go travelling. But there are some important items to remember...like your toothbrush! Here are our key questions to consider when packing for your journey.
Do I really need it...
...is the question you should ask yourself as you pack. Everyone is guilty of packing more than they need but this time you’ve got to be really tough. First aid supplies, sun cream and insect repellent are essential. It’s a good idea to keep these things in a side pocket to make sure they’re on hand in case of emergencies.
Keep all your clothing to a minimum. You'll be able to wash and re-wear them over and over again, so don’t get hung up on packing lots of t-shirts or lots of shoes. If you have forgotten (or lost) an important item of clothing such as underwear you can always pick some up on your travels. This goes for a lot of other items too. E.g. mosquito coils are always easy to get hold of abroad and are much cheaper than in the UK.
Do I need to pack food?
Snacks and water yes. Meals, no. It’s always good to have a few supplies but a big part of travelling is trying the local cuisine – so food will just take up valuable space in your backpack.
What kind of backpack do I need?
You will need a strong, sturdy backpack that’s not too big and heavy. Otherwise you won’t be able to carry it round with you easily. The size you take will determine how much you can pack. So, you may want to work out just how many changes of clothes you need and whether you intend to bring anything back with you from your life-changing trip. Only then should you choose your backpack.
Will it be hot, will it be cold?
This is another fundamental question. The answer will shape all your items. Obviously, you’re not going to take a bikini to Greenland. The weather will have a major impact on what you need to take. If it’s hot, you must have a hat for protection against the sun, and it’s wise to wear cotton. This will keep you cool on a hot day. If it’s cold, why not take some thermals? They don’t have to be big heavy ones, cotton thermals are small enough to fit under your clothes easily and will keep you nice and toasty.
Whatever the weather, you’ll need some sturdy and comfortable walking shoes and a pair of socks and trousers that could survive a nuclear holocaust.
Feel like we’ve forgotten something...
... we probably have. That’s because everyone’s different. There’s bound to be an item that’s so important, you can’t leave it behind. So take it, but remember, when something goes in the backpack, something must come out to make space for it.
Good luck with your packing and expect to do it many times before you get it right!
